DIY Mother’s Day Cards

Every year, families come together to celebrate the mothers in their lives. Held on the second Sunday of May, Mother’s Day does not always land on the same date every year. In any case, everyone celebrates Mother’s Day a little differently. Some families pamper the mother (or mothers) in their household with special treatment, doing all of the chores or tasks that would usually fall on their mom’s shoulders. Alternatively, some families buy their mothers and grandmothers nice gifts, beautiful cards, or even surprise vacation packages!

That said, the majority of moms simply want to feel the love and appreciation of their family, particularly their children. For this reason, DIY Mother’s Day cards are especially popular. Rather than simply going to the store and buying a generic card that doesn’t require much effort, a DIY card shows that you put a great deal of thought, care, time, and work into your gift. This way, you are bound to create a memorable Mother’s Day for all of the mothers in your life!

In today’s guide, we are going to take a closer look at making homemade Mother’s Day cards. We will also discuss some of the best ways to show your love and admiration through your DIY card. So, let’s get started!

How To Make A Homemade Mother’s Day Card

There is no one “correct” way to make a homemade Mother’s Day Card. That said, there are certainly incorrect ways to do it. You should never just throw together something at the last minute. Your mother will surely know and it will not feel as though you put much love or care into the project. Instead, you should plan ahead of time and consider various homemade Mother’s Day card ideas.

For example, if your family has younger children, you might consider turning card making on Mother’s Day into a family activity. Instead of creating the cards ahead of time, you can all work on them together and create a lasting memory of the day. Once everyone is finished with their respective cards, they can all be presented with love to your mother!

If you do not have younger children in your family or you simply prefer to prepare the cards ahead of time, the best Mother’s Day cards are personalized in some way. This means that you shouldn’t just write “Happy Mother’s Day” on a piece of white card stock and hand it to your mom. She may appreciate it, but she would likely appreciate it much more if you added personal details, decorations, or memories.

You don’t have to be a great writer, either. You can show your love on Mother’s Day through images as well. If you have a funny or memorable family photo, you can glue it to colorful card stock and add extra colors, adornments, or decorations that you know would appeal to your mom. Alternatively, you can add images and decorations that reflect you as a person, especially if they can emphasize the bond you have with your mother.

For example, let’s say that you and your mother love to listen to classical music together. You can use your artistic skills to recreate a hand-drawn version of a classical piece of music on the outside of foldable card stock. On the inside of the card, you can write about how much you love listening to beautiful music with her. And this is just one idea! The truth is that there are virtually no limits to the types of personalized cards you can make for your mother on her special day!

DIY Pop Up Mother’s Day Cards

At first glance, DIY pop up cards seem really complicated. Fortunately, you do not need to be an expert in arts and crafts to make a great Mother’s Day pop up card. In fact, once you understand the basics of creating a 3D effect with your card, you can use an endless number of ideas to make your card even more special.

One very popular Mother’s Day card craft project is the pop-up flowers card. Many mothers receive flowers on Mother’s Day, but much like store-bought cards, these don’t show a lot of effort. It only takes a few minutes to run by the local grocery store or flower shop to pick up a bouquet of flowers. This is not to say that flowers are a bad idea on Mother’s Day! Many mothers love to receive beautiful flowers. However, the DIY pop up flower card is an even more exciting option.

To make this card, you simply need a few pieces of standard card stock or paper stock. First, take one piece of paper (or card stock) and fold it in half. This creates the basis for the card that can be opened. Then, cut a triangle into the folded side of the card. When you open the card, you now have a triangular section that can form the base of your “flower bouquet.” Next, fold another piece of paper in the same fashion and glue the first piece to the front of the second piece. Now you have a backing to support the design of your card.

Finally, you can use small, colorful pieces of paper that are either folded or cut to resemble flower pedals. These can be glued to thin pieces of green paper to create 2D images of flowers. Once you have made at least 6 flowers, you can begin to glue them to the inside of your card “bouquet.” Now all of the most difficult parts are done! You just need to decorate your card as you see fit with images, words, or additional adornments.

It is important to note that the pop up flowers card is just one example of a pop up card. You could use 2D balloons, hearts, rainbows, or even photos of your family members to create the pop up effect. It all comes down to your personal tastes, what you want to express to your mom, and your imagination!

What Should You Write On A Mother’s Day Card?

As previously mentioned, you should do your best to personalize your card and Mother’s Day greeting as much as possible. That said, there are a few sample phrases that you can include on your card or use as part of your card’s message:

  • Happy Mother’s Day!
  • To the best mom in the world…
  • Hoping that you have the best Mother’s Day ever!

You can also put funny remarks in your card, especially if you have inside jokes with your mom. Here are a few more sample ideas:

  • I could never express how much I love you…so I won’t!
  • Happy Mother’s Day to my best friend and my cheapest therapist!
  • I know it’s not easy being a mom. If it were, Dad would do it!
